In the West, I grew up seeing only occasional Tibetan flags, carefully lined in a single string. While they stood out with their bold colors, they always look so tame and solitary. Arriving in Tibet, I saw layers upon layers of Tibetan flags, thick as a blanket, and many faded from the elements. It seemed the more flags in one place, the holier it was.
